Women Patriots in the American Revolution: Stories of Bravery, Daring, and Compassion

Sarah Osborn went with her husband when he joined the Continental Army. She was granted a pension, after she told stories of her camp life and what she encountered the three years she served. She gave an interesting view of the escape of Benedict Arnold, a meeting with General George Washington, and the hanging of a man fort reason. She was an eyewitness to the surrender of the British at Yorktown, "The British General at the head of the army was a large portly man, full face, and the tears rolled down his cheeks as he passed along. But it was not Cornwallis. I saw the latter afterwards and his being a man of diminutive appearance and having crossed eyes."            There are 88 stories, many in their own words, of women young and old that risked their lives by standing up against the British Army and their allies. Eleven year old Phoebe Reynolds tell show she rescued her father from Tories, even after they stabbed her three times with a sword.            Read a letter written by Elizabeth Burgin, which describes her involvement in helping 200 American prisoners escape from the British. You will be amazed at the courage of Betsy Dowdy, the female Paul Revere, as she rides to raise the militia against the British. This sixteen year old girl's ride was twice as long as Revere's ride, and she did not get captured. You will laugh at how Mammy Kate, a black slave, was able to sneak her master out of a British prison right under the nose of the guards. Read more
